Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7277

This specimen was lot 7277 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1874. London Mint. Victoria. NGC AU-50. A wholesome example with very little signs of handling and honest wear one would expect for the assigned grade. A light honey gold patina on this well made piece." This type was struck 1871-85 with the St. George reverse and the 1874 is a better date. Sovereigns of this date with the shield reverse (KM 736.2) also exist but are rare.

Recorded mintage: 521,000 including the shield reverse.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.
