This specimen was lot 3873 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, 1873. NGC MS-63 BN. Dark toning in areas with natural copper luster. Good luster in the protected areas. Very crisp features." This penny was struck 1860-73 in several varieties and is common, tho the proofs are rare. Worn specimens fill dealer junk boxes. Numerous varieties exist.
