This specimen was lot 33110 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria gold Sovereign 1876 MS62 NGC. Evenly distributed signs of handling set the grade. Regardless, an always popular type, with bright luster." This type was struck 1871-85 in considerable numbers. The obverse was carried over from the type of 1838-74 but the reverse revived the St. George and the dragon design last used in 1825.
Recorded mintage: 3,319,000 incl. proofs. a slightly better date.
