This specimen was lot 34156 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Charles II Maundy Penny 1677 MS64 NGC. A wonderous offering for the maundy enthusiast in search of the absolute apex of quality. Incredibly pronounced features, benefit of a razor sharp strike, and an overly appealing blend of rolling tones and bright underlying luster. Exceedingly desirable as this piece is currently the finest certified by either NGC or PCGS." All the dated silver pennies of Charles II are of this type, which is common. The silver penny was struck thru the eighteenth century but became less and less useful until finally superseded by Boulton and Watt's copper penny of the 1790's. Silver pennies are still struck for the Maundy sets.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 432.
