GB SB818-21058r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21058 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Guineas, 1677. Charles II (1660-85). PCGS Genuine--Harshly Cleaned, AU Details Secure Holder. Pointed truncation on bust. A sharply struck example of this elusive issue with a significant number of fine hairlines in the obverse fields that, while present, deter the overall appearance far less than the 'harshly cleaned' assignment would suggest. Worthy of careful consideration as such." The five guineas was struck as Fr-281 (no symbol), Fr-282 (elephant), Fr-283 (elephant & castle). This variety was struck 1668-78 and with a different bust 1678-84. While this coin is not particularly rare, it was big, glamorous and expensive when it was new and it remains so today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 41.75 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-281, S-3328A; KM-430.1.
