Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 31228

This specimen was lot 31228 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $8,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Guinea, 1677. London Mint. Charles II. PCGS AU-55. Very SCARCE when offered in in such wondrous condition, this incredibly engaging Guinea offers attractive luster and a bareness of contact on the surfaces. A slightly mushy strike is noted, a not uncommon occurrence on this type in shallow relief. Overall this piece provides a very strong example for the advanced collector of British milled coinage. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This type was struck 1672-84. This date comes plain (shown here), with an elephant below the bust or an elephant and castle below the bust. All are scarce but the plain obverse sells at a slight discount.
