Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74715

This specimen was lot 74715 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Penny, 1679. London Mint. Charles II. NGC MS-61. A very deeply toned example, this specimen presents a bit of a cameo nature through its mostly gunmetal gray highlights." This type was struck for circulation 1670-84. While it was used for the Maundy ceremony, it was not struck specifically for that purpose as silver pennies are today. The penny would not be struck in copper until 1797.
