Künker sale 354, lot 6607

This specimen was lot 6607 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €480 (about US$668 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WEIMARER REPUBLIK. 1 Rentenpfennig 1929, F. Fehlprägung infolge falscher Stempelkopplung. RR Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, Weimar Republic, one pfennig of 1929, muled dies. Very rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The rentenmark and its subdivision the rentenpfennig were used 1923-24. In 1929, the Stuttgart mint was supposed to strike reichspfennig (KM 37) but apparently muled the 1929 reverse from a leftover rentenpfennig obverse of 1923-24. This is a repeat of a similar error which occurred at Berlin in 1925. The weight, composition and diameter was the same for both types. The Stuttgart mint struck 3,150,000 reichspfennig correctly and it is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a very scarce date.

Specification: 2 g, bronze.

Catalog reference: KM 30, J. 306 Anm.
