This specimen was lot 75140 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Weimar Republic. 5 Mark, 1929-J. Hamburg Mint. PCGS PROOF-62. Struck to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Gotthold Lessing. A bright, gleaming proof issue possessing some faint friction in the fields consistent with the grade but overall quite appealing." This type, issued 1929, was struck in some numbers in Berlin ("A"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J", shown here). It is among the more available of the Weimar commemoratives. We have included it in our category of thalers based on its size, even tho it is only 0.500 fine.

Recorded mintage: 13,000 plus a few proofs.
