France 1807-Q 2 francs
This specimen was lot 71221 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $244. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1807-Q. Perpignan Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS Genuine--Gouged, VF Details. Despite its noted scratch, this minor stands as a pleasing representative of a more difficult type. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired on 17 May 1967 in Brussels for $6.30)." This type was struck 1806-07 during the reign of Napoleon I from eleven mints. The specimen shown is from Perpignan and is scarce. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. In 1807, the emperor's bust was revised. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.
Recorded mintage: 33,033 (33,087 per the SCWC).
Specification: 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, lettered edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
