Stack's Bowers September 2025 ANA sale, lot 43384
SB825-43384r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43384 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1807-M. Toulouse Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS VF-30. The only example of the type in the PCGS census, this moderately circulated specimen features an amber-gray hue with some hints of cobalt sprinkled throughout. SCARCE and highly difficult in this charming state of preservation. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Elsen in 2000 for $431). Ex: Jean Elsen (3/2000) Lot # 1667." This type was struck 1806-07 at eleven mints. The Paris mint adopted a curly haired bust of Napoleon in 1807 which was contemptuously rejected by the Emperor and replaced by the laureate head, which the Toulouse mint did not adopt until 1808.

Recorded mintage: 8,860, a scarce date.

Specifications: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier (1763-1819).

Catalog reference: KM-658.10; Gad-496; F.252/14.
