Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 71387

This specimen was lot 71387 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $240. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1807-L. Bayonne Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS EF-40. A charming survivor, this specimen exhibits a bit of a deeper tone across its reverse. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Glendining's in 1964 for $2). Ex: Glendining's (10/1964) Lot # 1059 (part of)." This type was struck 1806-07 with 19 different date-mintmark combinations, of which the 1806-A is the only one at all common and the 1806-L and 1807-L slightly scarce. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed.

Recorded mintage: 176,508^[2], a slightly better date.

Specification: 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
