This specimen was part of lot 71362 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $854. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Environmental Damage. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This dime-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of Napoleon as emperor. The type was struck 1807-08 and the 1808-A is one of the commonest Napoleonic demi-francs. It replaced a curly-haired bust rejected by the emperor (KM 679). It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 16 dates for the type, some very rare.
Recorded mintage: 46,006[2] plus 58,458 of the curly head (KM 679).
