Heritage sale 3026, lot 24531

This specimen was lot 24531 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1767-Q, Perpignan, AU Details NGC (surface hairlines), deeply toned with old-time rose gold patina, apparently cleaned long ago but now quite attractive." This type was struck for France 1742-73 in some numbers but the Perpignan mint output, tho steady, was always small. It would be a rare mint if collectors collected these by mint. As such, it receives little premium over a common date such as the Strasbourg issues of 1743-49. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
