France 1767-R 1/5 ecu

This coin, called a cinquième d'écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a twenty cent piece. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the 1/5 écu = 24 sols. The type was struck 1741-72 and is recorded from the Orléans mint for 1741-42, 1753-54, 1759-62, 1764 and 1766-67. This specimen was lot 325 in CGB sale 46 (Paris, December 2010).

Recorded mintage: 4,150 (priced[1] about double the common date such as 1769-L).

Specification: 5.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, 26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
