Sincona sale 73, lot 1230

The first specimen was lot 20119 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1767-R. Orleans Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A highly lustrous coin with attractive orange toning accents that highlight many of the raised designs." The second specimen was lot 1230 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,187 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XV. 1715-1774. 2 Louis d'or au bandeau 1767 R, Orleans. Vorzüglich. Leicht justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, double louis d'or au bandeau of 1767, Orleans mint. Extremely fine, Minor adjustment marks.)"

This type was struck for France 1742-73 in some numbers but the Orleans mint output, tho reported for 1742-43, 1751-52, 1766-68, was usually small. Only the 1766-R and 1767-R are noted as common in Gadoury. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Recorded mintage: 76,803[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers. The second specimen is 16.26 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-463, Dr/4 № 792, Dr/2 № 542, KM-519.15; Gad-346.
