This specimen was lot 13181 in Heritage sale 397 (New York, January 2006) where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XV gold 2 Louis d'Or 1768R, AU55 NGC, a choice coin with bold details and light toning over lustrous surfaces." This type was struck for France 1742-73 in some numbers but the Orléans mint issued this type 1742-43, 1751-52, 1766-68 only. It would be a rare mint if collectors collected these by mint. As such, it receives little premium over a common date such as the Strasbourg issues of 1743-49. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
