France 1768-Pau louis d'or

Sincona sale 18, lot 2185

This specimen was lot 2185 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 725 (about US$955 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Louis dor au bandeau 1768. Pau Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, louis d'or of the ribbon of 1768, Pau mint, extremely fine or better.)"

This specimen is louis d'or du Béarn au bandeau struck at the Pau mint, one of a type struck there for France in 1740-71. This specimen is counted as a better date, even tho its mintage is nearly equal to the Paris output for the year.

Recorded mintage: 129,388[1].

Specification: 8.158 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 8.11 g.
