Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21170

This specimen was lot 21170 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1766. Pau Mint. Louis XV. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Cow mint mark. Issued for the province of Bearn. An attractive and original looking survivor offering a bold strike with plenty of remaining luster and lovely light orange patination pleasing to the eye." The Pau mint in the French province of Béarn in the Pyrenées struck this type 1742-45, 1750-70. This is obtains a substantial premium because French collectors have considered the Pau mint product as a separate subtype because of the different obverse legend.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Roéttiers.
