England (1547-51)-WS halfgroat
This specimen was lot 7182 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Groat, ND (1547-51). Bristol Mint; mm: -/(WS monogram). Edward VI. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust facing slightly right, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchee. Though there is environmental damage, the details remain strong and this stands as a nice, collectable example of a more desirable hammered issue. From the Runze Collection." The scowling portrait of the bloated Henry VIII is strongly reminiscent of certain current politicians. The old portrait was probably used as an excuse to continue issuing debased silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
