England (1547-49) halfgroat

CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 1082

This specimen was lot 1082 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $918.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "TUDOR. Edward VI. 1547-1553. AR Halfgroat. First period. Canterbury mint; im –. Struck April 1547-January 1549. Crowned and mantled bust right; EDOARD / CIVI TAS CAN TON, coat-of-arms over long cross fourchée. Toned, slightly wavy with area of weakness at center, slight double strike. Near VF. From the Alexander Christopher Collection." This two pence or halfgroat was struck at the same time as halfgroats featuring the head of the late Henry VIII. We don't know if this coin was debased or restored to "good old" sterling silver.

Specification: 1.00 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 20 mm diameter, 1.24 g, 12 h axis.
