England (1547-49) crown Fr-175
This specimen was lot 64 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,457 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. Edward VI, Coinage in the name of Henry VIII. 1547-1551. Crown of the double rose n. d. (1547-1549), Southwark. Mintmark E. Äusserst selten. NGC VF25. (Extremely rare.)" The crown was tariffed at five shillings. This issue was struck in the name of the deceased Henry VIII. The young king was governed by regents throughout his reign, whose bungling of a war with Scotland (the "Rough Wooing") caused unrest and economic distress. The coinage was debased to pay for the war, a practice continued from Henry's reign.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 50 grains (3.23 g), gold, this specimen 3.01 g.
