England (1422-30)-C 1/2 noble Fr-113
This specimen was lot 1036 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,918 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Henry VI. First Reign, 1422-1461. 1/2 Noble n. d. (1422-c.1430), Calais. Annulet issue. Mintmark lis. Annulet by sword arm and in one spand[r]el on reverse. Flag at stern and C in centre of reverse. Very rare. NGC XF Details. Small scratches." The noble was introduced by Edward III as part of a monetary reform and was tariffed at eighty pence (6 shillings 8 pence) and was the first gold coin to circulate in several centuries. In 1412 the noble was reduced from 120 grains to 108 grains. It survived in that form until the introduction of the gold angel in 1465. The "C" in the center of the reverse is the Calais mintmark.
