Sincona sale 79, lot 1041

This specimen was lot 1041 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,116 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Henry VI. First Reign, 1422-1461. 1/4 Noble n. d. (c.1431-1433), Tower Mint. Rosette-mascle issue. Mintmark lis. Lis over shield, rosettes right and left and rosette stops. Very rare. NGC AU Details. Slightly bent." The gold noble, originally 120 grains on its introduction, was reduced to 108 grains in 1412 with a value of six shillings eight pence. This was maintained thru the unhappy reign of Henry VI despite a gradually worsening shortage of bullion.
