Denmark 1619 hvid

from the Stack's Bowers February 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 10119

This specimen was lot 10119 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €192 (about US$200). The catalog description^[1] noted, "DENMARK. Hvid, 1619. Christian IV. NGC EF-45. 'Hvid' means white and the coin type takes its name from its color. When it was first introduced in Northern Germany in the 1390s, it had a high silver content and thus looked white. The silver content of the Danish Hvide, however, quickly diminished, and this 1619 Hvid holds less than 10% silver. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)." This type was struck 1619 and undated and was worth 1/192 speciedaler. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.56 g, 0.093 fine silver, 13-14 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-63.1; Hede-102C; Sieg-8.3; Schou-157; AH-13.9.1; Bruun-5150.
