Künker Auction 441, lot 4950

This specimen was lot 4950 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,376 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DÄNEMARK, KÖNIGREICH Christian IV., 1588-1648. 2 Kronen 1619, Helsingør. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler im Randbereich der Vorderseite, kl. Graffito im Feld der Rückseite, sehr schön. Exemplar der Sammlung Münzen und Medaillen aus adeligem Privatbesitz. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian IV, 1588-1648, double crown of 1619, Elsinore mint. Handsome patina, planchet defect on the obverse rim, light graffito in the reverse field.)"

This type was struck 1618-19. The double kronen struck at Copenhagen had a trefoil (☘) mintmark; those struck at Helsingør had crossed hammers (shown here). Some double kronen show a star by the king's foot, which is missing on this example. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
