Künker Auction 441, lot 4949

This specimen was lot 4949 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,476 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DÄNEMARK, KÖNIGREICH Christian IV., 1588-1648. Speciedaler 1619, Kopenhagen. Münzmeister Nicolaus Schwabe. RR Leichte Belagreste, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung Münzen und Medaillen aus adeligem Privatbesitz. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian IV, 1588-1648, speciedaler of 169, Copenhagen mint. Very rare, some stains, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1609-10, 1618-20 along with a silver double krone (Dav-3516). The Copenhagen mint used a trefoil (☘) mintmark in this period. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.23 g, 0.875 fine silver, 38-39 mm diameter, this specimen 28,20 g.

Catalog reference: KM 44, Dav-3514; Hede 53 C.
