Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1959

This specimen was lot 1959 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €380 (about US$494 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DANEMARK, Christian IV (1588-1648), AR krone, 1618. D/ Le roi deb. à d., ten. un sceptre sur l'épaule et le pommeau de son épée. R/ La couronne royale sous la date. En dessous, *R*F*P*. Rare. Très Beau. (Denmark, Christian IV, 1588-1648, silver krone of 1618. Obverse: the king stands right, resting a scepter on his shoulder and holding a sword; reverse: the royal crown under the date, "*R*F*P*" below. Rare, Very Fine.)"

Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. Either they were melted extensively or the poverty of the king prevented large issues or both. This type of 1618 is not the most expensive but still runs twice the price of a contemporary thaler from Brunswick or Saxony. It is on the light side to be considered a thaler but we include it as a nod to Davenport. There are two mintmarks for this date: crossed scabbards (shown here) = Johan Post; shamrock = Nicolaus Schwabe.
