The first specimen was lot 4014 in Goldberg sale 67 (Los Angeles, January 2012), where it sold for $258.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Costa Rica. Real, ND (1849-1857). Type VI Countermark on Great Britain 1850 Sixpence (KM-733). Very Fine." The second specimen was lot 26736 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $253. The catalog description[2] noted, "English 6d 1850 with lion c/m. Lion countermark on Victoria Sixpence of 1850; that was the final year in which CR imported the host coins for validating them, and is thus the most common year, as well as the one most often seen in nice quality. EF for wear but with some minor marks and stain. Dana Roberts Collection and Study Group." The third specimen was lot 71581 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[3] noted, "COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Great Britain. Real, ND (1849-57). NGC VF-30; Countermark: EF Standard. KM-89. Type VI countermark on 1837 Great Britain 6 Pence (KM-712). From the David Sterling Collection." In the mid-nineteenth century, Costa Rica suffered from recurring coin shortages, which the mint in San José was incapable of alleviating. To extend the life of lightweight and worn coin, the government counterstamped numerous coins of Central America and foreign countries in the 1840's. This counterstamp is catalogued as "type VI" and was used 1849-57 on coins of Great Britain as well as local issues. The host coin shown on the first example is an 1850 six pence of Great Britain.
