Costa Rica (1849-57) c/s 2 reales KM-94
This specimen was lot 44269 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. 2 Reales, ND (1849-57). NGC VF Details--Surface Hairlines. "lion" countermark (Type VII, 1849-57) on a Great Britain Shilling of Victoria, dated 1846. The counterstamp is deeply punched and well detailed, placed on the neck of the portrait as is typical. The host is worn but exhibits no major marks, and is toned a pleasant medium gray." This countermark was applied to Costa Rican two reales (KM 77) and British shillings of several types (KM 93, 94, 95). The countermark was also used to validate half reales (KM 67, 68, 69), reales (KM 72, 73, 74, 87, 88, 89, 90), half escudos (KM 80, 81) and escudos (KM 84). Altho Costa Rica participated in minting coinage of the Central American Republic, there was never enough bullion to satisfy local needs, especially as specie was drained to pay for European imports. Costa Rica went thru a series of six different counterstamps 1841-57 in ineffectual attempts to keep coin within the country.
