The second specimen was lot 73177 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Great Britain. 2 Reales, ND (1849-57). PCGS VF-30. Countermark: EF Details. Type VII countermark on 1834 Great Britain Shilling. Moderate circulation wear on the host coin, with an exceptionally strong and full countermark. From the David Sterling Collection." In the mid-nineteenth century, Costa Rica suffered from recurring coin shortages, which the mint in San José was incapable of alleviating. To extend the life of lightweight and worn coin, the government counterstamped numerous coins of Central America and foreign countries in the 1840's. This counterstamp is catalogued as "type VI" and was used 1849-57 on coins of Great Britain as well as local issues. The host coin shown on the first example is an 1817 shilling of Great Britain, the second an 1834 shilling of WIlliam IV, a type not listed in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin: 5.65 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: The first specimen is KM-93.
