Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 40290

This specimen was lot 40290 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. Real, ND (1849). San Jose Mint. PCGS VF-35, Countermark: XF Details. Issued by decree of 22 November 1849 under Juan Rafael More Porras. Countermark: Type VII, Lion advancing left, legend around. Applied to the reverse of a 1849-CR JB Costa Rica (Central American Republic) Real (KM-21a)." The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible.
