Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 22322
SB121-22322r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22322 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted,

"COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Guatemala. "Carrillo" Real, ND (1841). San Jose Mint. NGC Fine Details--Holed; Countermark: VF Standard. Type I Countermark. Issued by decree of 19 November 1841 under Braulio Carrillo Colina. A VERY RARE and the third rarest silver denomination from the series after the 4 Reales and 1/2 Real. Double 6-pointed star within circle applied to the obverse on the back of the kings neck, plug removed from the obverse; Reverse: test punch at 5 o'clock between "ET" and "IND" of legend. All on an 1791-NG RM Guatemala bust 1 Real of Charles IIII (IV). A lovely survivor exhibiting nice honest wear with a bold full countermark displaying beautiful rich cabinet patina and hints of luster in the protected areas. A small hole at 12 o'clock pierced from reverse as indicated on the NGC insert done long ago now toned matching the rest of the coin. Despite its shortcomings a very attractive representative of this highly sought after type on a very desirable host that seldom appears on the market. Ex: Richard Stuart Collection."

The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver (before punching).

Catalog reference: cf. KM-4 (unlisted host); Segura-Pg.14 (this piece listed); Gurdian-Pg.62/63 Type VI (this piece listed).
