Stack's Bowers February 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73463
SB222-73463r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73463 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Spain. Cob Real, 1846. San Jose Mint. NGC VF-20. Counterstamped on Spanish Real. The counterstamping on this example is strongly impressed with the amount of detail remaining exceeding the average for this often crude type. Overall gunmetal gray color pervades, with less evidence of handling present than would normally be expected for the grade assigned." This type IV counterstamp was also used to counterstamp 4 reales. The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-47.
