This specimen was lot 1677 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $805. The catalog description[1] noted, "1848 JB 1/2 escudo. CR mint. EF-45 (NGC). Types as above, no counterstamp. Medium gold with deep toning. Small reverse encrustation in legend near 5:00. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck intermittently in Costa Rica 1828-49 and in Guatemala 1824-43.
Recorded mintage: 14,000.
Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 1.54 grams, 14.20 mm diameter.
