Costa Rica 1848-CR JB 1/2 real
This specimen was part of lot 27037 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $381.88. The catalog description[2] noted, "Central American Republic 1/2 Reales CREZCA of 1848 & 1849, KM20a and KM68, Medio Real 1848 and the final year 1849 both with CREZCA in the obverse legend. The original 1848 is very scarce and grades VF. There is no uncounterstamped 1849 in this collection, and the date was also missing in the Dana Roberts, Whittier and Fred Mayer Collections. Both the 1848 and 1849 are represented with the Lion counterstamp, XF and F-VF respectively. The Cecil Webster Collection of Costa Rica." This type is listed for 1846-49 with reduced fineness from the previous issue. It is more often seen with the counterstamp of 1849-57 (KM 68).
