Costa Rica (1841-42) c/m 8 reales KM-22
This specimen was lot 21359 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted,
"COSTA RICA. Costa Rica - Peru. "Carrillo" 8 Reales, ND (1841). San Jose Mint. PCGS VF-30. Countermark: AU Details. Issued by decree of 19 November 1841 under Braulio Carrillo Colina. Countermark: Type I, small six-pointed star within larger six-pointed radiant star within circular incuse; plug removed from the obverse to the right of the bust; Reverse: test punch at 5 o'clock between "ET" and "IND" of legend. Countermark applied to the obverse of an 1781-LIMA MI Peru Bust 8 Reales of Charles III (KM-78). This charming and moderately worn example yields a rather strong countermark applied to the neck of the Spanish king who had been deceased for over five decades at the time of application."
The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin before mutilation: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver.
