Sedwick sale 27. lot 890

This specimen was lot 890 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $5,355. The catalog description[1] noted, "Costa Rica, 8 reales, circular hole-punch and Carrillo "star" countermark (Type I, 1841-42) on a Potosi, Bolivia, 8 soles, 1831JL, very rare, NGC VG 8, c/s VF standard. Bold full countermark and clean hole-punch, a very rare countermark to begin with but particularly rare on this host (unlisted) with very lightly toned fields and no issues for the grade. NGC #5846759-002." The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver (before punching), this specimen 25.69 grams.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted.
