Sedwick sale 27. lot 896

This specimen was lot 896 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $833. The catalog description[1] noted, "Costa Rica, 2 reales, Liberty head / ceiba tree double countermark (Type III, 1845) on a Madrid, Spain, bust 4 reales de vellon, Joseph Napoleon, 1811A. Bold and nearly full countermarks on nicely toned AVF host with bold legends and date, above average for this type." The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible.
