This specimen was lot 1019 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA, 2 reales, female head / ceiba tree counterstamp (Type III, 1845) on a Madrid, Spain, bust 2 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1819 GJ, NGC F 15 (c/s XF standard). Great full counterstamp located near top of coin with associated edge-split, nicer host than usual with bold details and contrasting toning." The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible. This example realized six times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin: 6.77 g, 0.812 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-41.
