This specimen was lot 1018 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA, 2 reales, female head / ceiba tree counterstamp (Type III, 1845) on a Cuba (Trinidad / Santiago / Principe) 2 reales lattice countermark (1841) on a Madrid, Spain, bust 2 reales, Charles IV, 1808 AI, NGC VG 8 (c/s VF weak). Both the counterstamp and countermark in center and clearly visible, as is the host date and mintmark and assayer, all nicely toned, interesting triple-country issue in numeric grade (rare thus)." The SCWC lists a variety of coins counterstamped by Costa Rica in the early 1840's, from half reales to eight reales, all now very rare. Doubtless they were withdrawn and melted as soon as possible. This example realized 130 times the catalog value.
