This specimen was lot 642 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. 2 Escudos, 1850-CR JB. Nice strike. NGC AU-58." This type was struck in Costa Rica using the design of the Central American Republic; by 1850, that federation was only a memory. Other dates include 1825, 1835 and 1843, all from Costa Rica.
