This specimen was lot 1686 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1851 JB 1 escudo. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold, slightly reflective, better than usual central strike. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck 1850-55 along with similar half, two and four escudos pieces. This type almost never comes fully struck; the specimen shown here is better struck than the plate coin in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: 4,388.

Specification: 3.1 g, 0.875 fine gold, .087 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 3.17 grams, 18.60 mm diameter.
