Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71573

This specimen was lot 71573 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. 1/2 Escudo, 1851-JB. San Jose Mint. PCGS AU-55. This tiny piece displays a satin-to-matte luster with negligible toning on its yellow-gold surfaces. Somewhat softly struck, nonetheless an attractive piece from early Republic coinage. From the David Sterling Collection." This type was struck 1850-55 and 1864. It is not particularly rare, given the small mintage, but well-struck and undamaged specimens are few.

Specification: 1.6 g, 0.875 fine gold.
