Sedwick sale 11, lot 1073

The specimen shown was lot 1073 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $12,650. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Popayán, Colombia, bust 1 real, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1813/0JF, rare. Bold VF with attractive brown toning around details, bold rims, no problems, key rarity of the series. This date is only found as an overdate. Cover coin (back cover) for Numis-Notas #95 (2001). Jorge Ortiz Murias collection of Colombian colonial minors."

The last one real of Charles IV was issued from Bogotá in 1804. Production of this type began in Bogotá 1810 and ran until 1819, with an issue from Popayán for 1810 and 1813 (shown here). This type, tho not common, appears much more often than prior types. This date is rare as the republicans seized the town in July.
