Chile 1813-So FJ real
This specimen was lot 1061 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, bust 1 real, Ferdinand VII (bust of Charles IV), 1813 FJ, PCGS AU 58 (Coleccion Val y Mexia label). Choice strike with splashes of colorful toning (mostly red) over muted luster, fully MS in our opinion. Pedigreed to the Coleccion Val y Mexia (stated on special label)." This type, struck 1808-17 for Ferdinand VII with the bust of the abdicated Charles IV, is somewhat scarce. An overdate, 1813/2, is also reported. By 1813, the bust of Charles IV was used only on the one real (shown here) and the four reales; the other denominations showed the proper bust of Ferdinand.
Recorded mintage: 213,000 for all varieties.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver.
