Guatemala 1813-NG M real
The first specimen was lot 6669 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Real, 1813-M. NGC MS-62. The only example at this numeric grade with only two pieces certified finer. Nice strike, attractive toning with gunmetal hints." The second specimen was part of lot 35303 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), which sold for $305.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Ferdinand VII Lot of Ten 1 Real Coins, Various dates and grades, some cleaned. Average grade is VF. From The Santa Maria Collection." This specimen is an example of a type struck in Guatemala 1811-21 with a few backdated 1808. This "standard bust" one real is the most common one real from Guatemala with 1821 as the most common date. Guatemala avoided the violence that devastated Mexico during the war of independence but joined Iturbide's empire in 1821.
