Chile H3040-29512r.jpg

This specimen was lot 29512 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1813/2 SO-FJ UNC Details (Excessive Surface Hairlines) NGC, Santiago mint. Cleaning evidence in the fields account for the designation, but a lustrous specimen well struck on an above average flan. Still scarce in this preservation despite the noted flaws." The specimen was one of a series struck 1811-17 during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It bears his name and the bust of Charles IV, who abdicated in 1808. The bust of Ferdinand appears on the eight reales and the two reales but not on any gold. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW, this specimen 26.97 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16424 (overdate), Onza-1354, Fr-29, KM 78.
