Popayan 1813 1/2 real
The years 1811-1819 were the first years of liberation during the struggle for independence from Spain. The first republican coinage was issued during this period of 'La Patria Boba', except for the interval 1817-1818, when Royalists took brief control. The royalists also produced coinage from areas which were under their control longer, such as Popayán. Shown is a copper 1813 half real issued in Popayán as provisional coinage during the years the Royalists resisted invasion by Republican forces. It was lot 23702 and sold on April 15, 2011 for $4,887.50 at the 2011 April Rosemont Signature World & Ancient Coins CICF Auction #3014 by Heritage Auctions. The catalog description reads:
"Popayán provisional 1/2 Real 1813, AU55 BN NGC, copper one-year emergency coinage of Royalists. Almazar had one well over a quarter century ago which went to Whittier. Probably about five extant. This apparently acquired from Louis Hudson about two decades ago for $1250. Very special and very rare. From The Dana Roberts Collection."
