Popayan 1813 8 reales
The years 1811-1819 were the first years of liberation during the struggle for independence from Spain. The first republican coinage was issued during this period of 'La Patria Boba', except for the interval 1817-1818, when Royalists took brief control. The royalists also produced coinage from areas which were under their control longer, such as Santa Marta and Popayán. The first specimen is a copper 1813 eight reales issued in Popayán as Royalist provisional coinage. It is the unusual case of a crown being issued in copper, indicating the difficult conditions experienced by the city in this phase of the war. It was lot 9039 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] reads: "COLOMBIA. Royalist Provisional Coinage. 8 Reales, 1813. Popayán Mint. Minor verdigris deposits and small planchet laminations. Glossy BROWN EXTREMELY FINE/ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The second specimen was lot 411 in Aureo sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 650 euro (about US$1,031 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1813. Popayán. 8 reales. CU. Acuñación provisional realista. Bella. Escasa. EBC. (eight reales of 1813, Popayán mint, royalist provisional issue. Handsome, scarce, extremely fine.)"
Recorded mintage: unknown.
